Description

KYNA ELISA Kit

KYNA ELISA kits are used to detect Kynurenic Acid (KYNA) in serum, plasma and other biological samples. KYNA, or kynurenic acid, is a tryptophan metabolite formed in the kynurenine pathway when kynurenine is irreversibly transaminated by kynurenine aminotransferases, mainly in astrocytes but also in peripheral tissues such as liver and kidney. It acts as an endogenous antagonist at the glycine site of NMDA receptors and at alpha-7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, and as an agonist of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor and GPR35. These actions give it neuroprotective, anticonvulsant and anti-inflammatory properties, in contrast to the excitotoxic metabolite quinolinic acid. Altered KYNA levels have been reported in schizophrenia, Alzheimer disease, Huntington disease, depression, chronic inflammation and some cancers, so it is studied as an indicator of tryptophan metabolism and immune activation.
