Transmission & symptoms
Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a flavivirus transmitted by Ixodes ticks (and occasionally unpasteurised dairy). Infection can be biphasic, progressing in some cases to meningitis or encephalitis; a vaccine is available.
Diagnosis & serology
Diagnosis is chiefly serological — anti-TBEV IgM and IgG by ELISA — using recombinant envelope (E) and NS1 antigens, with attention to flavivirus cross-reactivity.
