Hormone & Small Molecule ELISA Kits
Competitive ELISA kits for steroid hormones, catecholamines, eicosanoids, vitamins, oxidative stress markers and other small molecules — with many kits species-independent because the molecule itself is the same in every species.
Small molecules can't be bound by two antibodies at once, so these kits use a competitive format instead of a sandwich.
Sample or standard goes into antibody-coated wells.
Analyte in the sample competes with labelled analyte for binding sites.
Unbound material is washed away and substrate is added.
Signal is inversely proportional to analyte concentration.

Small molecules are too small to be bound by two antibodies at once, so a sandwich ELISA is not possible. In a competitive ELISA the analyte in your sample competes with a labelled or plate-bound version for a limited number of antibody binding sites, so the signal falls as concentration rises.
Many small molecules, such as cortisol, dopamine and melatonin, are structurally identical across species, so many kits in this range are species-independent. Always check the validated species and sample types on each product page.
Validated matrices vary by analyte and kit — commonly serum, plasma, cell-culture supernatant, tissue homogenate and other biological fluids. Each product page lists the validated sample types and any sample preparation required.
Collect all samples at the same time of day and with the same method, as hormones such as cortisol and corticosterone follow a daily rhythm and rise quickly with handling stress.
