Rat models

Rat ELISA kits by model

The rat is a standard species for pharmacology, toxicology and neuroscience. Common readouts by model:

Inflammation & injury

Ischaemia–reperfusion, sepsis and tissue injury models.

Neuroscience & behaviour

Stress, depression and neurodegeneration models.

Metabolism & diabetes

Diet-induced and chemically induced diabetes models.

Toxicology & oxidative stress

Drug safety and oxidative damage studies.

Rat samples

Getting the most from rat samples

Most kits are validated for serum, plasma and cell-culture supernatant, and many for tissue homogenates such as brain, liver and kidney.

Tips for rat samples

  • Rats give larger blood volumes than mice, so serial sampling in time-course and PK studies is practical — keep the collection site and time of day consistent.
  • Collect corticosterone samples at the same time of day for every group, as levels follow a daily rhythm and rise with handling.
  • For oxidative stress markers such as MDA, keep samples cold and freeze aliquots quickly.
  • Check the recommended dilution on the product page before running your samples.

Sandwich or competitive rat ELISA?

For rat proteins

Sandwich ELISA

Two antibodies capture the target, so signal rises with concentration. The most sensitive choice for rat cytokines and proteins such as IL-6, TNF-alpha and BDNF.

For hormones & small molecules

Competitive ELISA

For targets too small to bind two antibodies, such as corticosterone. Signal falls as concentration rises.

FAQs

Rat ELISA kit FAQs

Can I use a mouse ELISA kit on rat samples?

Not reliably. Even closely related species can differ in the epitopes a kit's antibodies recognise. Use a rat kit, or check the datasheet for stated cross-reactivity with rat.

Which sample types work with rat ELISA kits?

Most kits are validated for serum, plasma and cell-culture supernatant, and many for tissue homogenates such as brain, liver or kidney. Each product page lists the validated sample types and dilutions.

Can I take repeated samples from the same rat?

Rats give larger blood volumes than mice, which makes serial sampling in time-course and pharmacokinetic studies easier. Use the same collection site and time of day at every time point.

How should I handle samples for oxidative stress markers like MDA?

Keep samples cold, process them quickly and store aliquots frozen, as lipid peroxidation can continue after collection. Avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles.

How quickly are rat ELISA kits delivered?

Typical lead time is 7–10 days. For bulk orders or a target that isn't listed, contact our team or see our custom ELISA kit service.
