What you can measure

Metabolic viability

Add-and-read reagents report the fraction of metabolically active cells in each well, read by absorbance or fluorescence.

3D organoid viability

A dedicated assay for organoids and other 3D culture models.

More viability chemistries

MTT and LDH kits are in cytotoxicity, CCK-8/WST-8 in proliferation, and ATP luminescence (CellQuant-Lux) in luciferase assays.

Choosing a read-out

Viability, cytotoxicity or proliferation?

Viability assays report the fraction of metabolically active cells; cytotoxicity assays report membrane damage and cell death; proliferation assays report the rate of cell division. Choosing the right read-out, or combining them, gives an accurate picture of how cells respond to a treatment.

FAQs

Cell viability assay FAQs

What does a cell viability assay measure?

It measures the proportion of live, metabolically active cells in a sample, usually through a metabolic indicator read by absorbance, fluorescence or luminescence.

Can I measure viability in organoids and spheroids?

Yes. The 3D Organoid Cell Viability Assay is designed for 3D models; for ATP-based viability in spheroids see CellQuant-Lux 3D in luciferase assays.

Are these assays suitable for screening?

Yes. Microplate formats with add-and-read workflows suit drug screening and toxicity testing.
