Stromal Cell-Derived Factor-1 (SDF-1) is a chemokine member of the intercrine family. The C-terminal tail distinguishes the five SDF1 molecular forms. The primary difference between SDF1 alpha and beta is that the four amino acids at the C-terminus of SDF1 beta but absent from SDF1 alpha. CXCR4 and CXCR7 receptors on the cell surface are responsible for SDF1 binding; it can also bind syndecan4. SDF1 is known to regulate patterning and cell number of neural progenitors, as well as angiogenesis. It also boosts the survival of myeloid precursor cells.
