RAD51D is a member of the RAD51 protein family whose members are extremely similar to bacterial RecA and Saccharomyces cerevisiae Rad51. RAD51 protein family members take part in the homologous recombination and repair of DNA. RAD51D forms a complex with several other members of the RAD51 family which catalyzes homologous pairing between single- and double-stranded DNA, and participates in the early stage of recombinational repair of DNA.

Defects in RAD51D are a cause of susceptibility to familial breast-ovarian cancer type 4 (BROVCA4). A condition associated with familial predisposition to cancer of the breast and ovaries. Characteristic features in affected families are an early age of onset of breast cancer (often before age 50), increased chance of bilateral cancers (cancer that develop in both breasts, or both ovaries, independently), frequent occurrence of breast cancer among men, increased incidence of tumors of other specific organs, such as the prostate.
