Description
Urinary Indican Test Kit (BA0256) (BA0256)
The Urinary Indican Test Kit (SKU: BA0256) provides an accurate, simple, fast and inexpensive screening tool for the identification of protein putrefaction in the gastrointestinal tract. Indican (indoxyl sulfate) is a putrefaction product resulting from the bacterial deconjugation of dietary tryptophan to indole in the small intestine, and its levels are directly associated with bacterial activity in the intestines. Elevated indican levels may indicate intestinal toxaemia or overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria, putrefaction of undigested food in the bowels, stomach disorders such as constipation or malabsorption, intestinal disorders and pancreatic insufficiency. This kit is a less hazardous modification of the original Obermeyer indican reagent and returns a result within 15 minutes. Each vial is used with a first-morning urine sample, and the developed colour in the top solvent layer is compared against a supplied colour chart to grade the result from normal to very high positive. The kit is intended for research use only and is not for diagnostic use.

Rapid colorimetric screening kit for the semi-quantitative determination of indican (indoxyl sulfate) in urine as an indicator of intestinal bacterial putrefaction.
- Less hazardous modification of the original Obermeyer indican reagent.
- Accurate, simple and inexpensive screening tool.
- Fast: results in 15 minutes with a visual colour-chart comparison requiring no instrumentation.
- Screening for protein putrefaction in the gastrointestinal tract.
- Assessment of intestinal bacterial activity, overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria and related disorders.
Note: The below protocol is a sample protocol. Protocols are specific to each batch/lot. For the correct instructions please follow the protocol included in your kit.
| Step | Procedure |
| 1 | Sample collection: no alcohol the night before; preferably a high-protein meal the night before; no iodine or bile supplements in high doses 3-4 days prior to testing. Obtain a first-morning urine sample in a clean container. |
| 2 | Unscrew the cap off the Indican vial. |
| 3 | Using the dropper, carefully transfer 2 × 1 mL of urine (each time filling the dropper to the top 1-mL line) into the vial, avoiding spillage. |
| 4 | Replace the cap and securely close the vial. Immediately invert the vial five times at 0, 5, 10 and 15 minutes. |
| 5 | Compare the colour in the top solvent layer with the Indican Colour Chart, record the result, and dispose of the materials properly. |
Grade the colour of the top solvent layer against the supplied Indican Colour Chart: Clear or Light Yellow = 0 (Normal); Greenish Blue = 1 (Low Positive); Light Blue = 2 (Medium Positive); Blue = 3 (High Positive); Dark Blue = 4 (Very High Positive).
