CXCL16
CXCL16 (C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 16, also known as SR-PSOX, CXCLG16 and SRPSOX) is a member of the intercrine alpha chemokine family that also acts as a scavenger receptor on macrophages. It binds oxidised low density lipoprotein and signals through CXCR6. Browse Assay Genie's current range of CXCL16 research reagents below, or read on for the biology behind the target.
CXCL16 combines two roles in a single protein. As a chemokine, it induces a strong chemotactic response and calcium mobilisation, and it binds CXCR6 (also called Bonzo). As a scavenger receptor on macrophages, it specifically binds OxLDL (oxidised low density lipoprotein), which suggests involvement in pathophysiology such as atherogenesis. NCBI Gene annotation lists chemokine activity as an enabled function of the protein.
The CXCL16 protein belongs to the intercrine alpha (chemokine CxC) family. UniProt records subcellular locations as both the cell membrane and secreted, consistent with a protein that can act at the cell surface as a receptor and as a soluble chemokine. The CXCL16 gene is placed by HGNC in two groups, chemokine ligands and scavenger receptors, which reflects this dual character. The mouse and rat orthologs are both named Cxcl16.
NCBI Gene summarises CXCL16 as involved in positive regulation of cell growth, the response to tumour necrosis factor and the response to type II interferon. It is described as a biomarker of COVID-19 and of systemic scleroderma. The previous HGNC name was chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 16, and SR-PSOX is the alias that reflects its scavenger receptor function.
CXCL16 binds oxidised LDL on macrophages, so it is studied in relation to atherogenesis and lipoprotein uptake.
CXCL16 induces a strong chemotactic response and calcium mobilisation, making it a subject in chemokine signalling studies.
CXCL16 binds CXCR6 (Bonzo), providing a ligand-receptor axis for investigating chemokine receptor biology.
CXCL16 is described as a biomarker of COVID-19 and systemic scleroderma, and responds to TNF and interferon gamma.
CXCL16 acts as a chemokine, inducing a strong chemotactic response and calcium mobilisation through binding to CXCR6. It also acts as a scavenger receptor on macrophages, where it specifically binds oxidised low density lipoprotein, suggesting a role in atherogenesis.
CXCL16 is also called SR-PSOX, CXCLG16 and SRPSOX. HGNC lists its earlier name as chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 16. The SR-PSOX alias reflects its scavenger receptor activity, and the protein is also recorded as C-X-C motif chemokine 16 in UniProt.
Mouse and rat both have an ortholog named Cxcl16; check the datasheet of any product for its validated reactivity. NCBI Gene describes CXCL16 as a biomarker of COVID-19 and systemic scleroderma, and UniProt links its OxLDL binding to atherogenesis.
