IL-11
IL-11 (interleukin 11, AGIF) is a secreted cytokine of the IL-6 superfamily and the gp130 family. It stimulates the proliferation of haematopoietic stem cells and megakaryocyte progenitors, and promotes megakaryocyte maturation and platelet production. Browse Assay Genie's current range of IL-11 research reagents below, or read on for the biology behind the target.
IL-11 is a cytokine that stimulates the proliferation of haematopoietic stem cells and megakaryocyte progenitor cells, and induces megakaryocyte maturation, resulting in increased platelet production. It also promotes the proliferation of hepatocytes in response to liver damage. NCBI Gene additionally reports that it stimulates the T-cell-dependent development of immunoglobulin-producing B cells.
IL-11 acts through a receptor formed by IL6ST (gp130) and IL11RA. Binding activates a signalling cascade that promotes cell proliferation, leading to the activation of intracellular protein kinases and the phosphorylation of STAT3. Two modes of signalling are described. In 'classic signalling', IL-11 interacts with membrane-bound IL11RA and IL6ST. In 'trans-signalling', IL-11 and soluble IL11RA bind IL6ST together.
The IL11 gene encodes a member of the gp130 family of cytokines, which drive the assembly of multisubunit receptor complexes that each contain at least one molecule of the transmembrane signalling receptor IL6ST. UniProt classifies the protein within the IL-6 superfamily, and HGNC places it in the interleukins and the IL-6 type cytokine family. The gene is also known by the alias AGIF. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been reported. Mouse and rat both carry an Il11 ortholog, which allows the IL-11 protein to be studied in common rodent models.
IL-11 stimulates the proliferation of haematopoietic stem cells and megakaryocyte progenitors, making it relevant to studies of blood cell development.
IL-11 induces megakaryocyte maturation and increases platelet production, so it is used to study how platelet formation is regulated.
IL-11 promotes hepatocyte proliferation in response to liver damage, linking it to research on the liver's response to injury.
IL-11 signals through IL6ST and IL11RA, with STAT3 phosphorylation, in classic and trans-signalling modes that can be compared across the gp130 cytokine family.
IL-11 is a secreted cytokine that stimulates haematopoietic stem cell and megakaryocyte progenitor proliferation, induces megakaryocyte maturation and increases platelet production. It also promotes hepatocyte proliferation after liver damage and supports the T-cell-dependent development of immunoglobulin-producing B cells.
IL-11 is encoded by the IL11 gene, whose HGNC name is interleukin 11. AGIF is a listed alias. NCBI Gene reports that alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms exist for this gene.
IL-11 binds a receptor made of IL6ST and IL11RA, activating protein kinases and STAT3 phosphorylation. Membrane-bound IL11RA mediates classic signalling, while soluble IL11RA mediates trans-signalling. Mouse and rat have an Il11 ortholog; check the datasheet of any product for its validated reactivity.
