IL-22
IL-22 (interleukin 22) is a secreted cytokine of the IL-10 family that modulates tissue responses during inflammation and supports epithelial regeneration after injury. It is also known as ILTIF, IL-TIF, zcyto18, IL-D110 and TIFa. Browse Assay Genie's current range of IL-22 research reagents below, or read on for the biology behind the target.
IL-22 is a cytokine that plays a critical role in modulating tissue responses during inflammation. It is essential for the regeneration of epithelial cells, which maintains barrier function after injury and helps prevent further tissue damage. Unlike most cytokines, IL-22 has no effect on immune cells; its targets are non-immune cells.
IL-22 signals through a heterodimeric receptor made up of two subunits: the specific receptor IL22RA1, which is present on non-immune cells in many organs, and the shared subunit IL10RB. Ligation of IL22RA1 by IL-22 activates the tyrosine kinases JAK1 and TYK2, which in turn activate STAT3. Through STAT3, ERK1/2 and PI3K/AKT pathways, IL-22 promotes cell survival and proliferation. It also promotes phosphorylation of GSK3B at Ser-9 and of CTTN, and promotes epithelial cell spreading.
The IL22 gene belongs to the interleukin gene group and the IL-10 family of cytokines, which mediate cellular inflammatory responses. The IL-22 protein functions in antimicrobial defence at mucosal surfaces and in tissue repair. It also has pro-inflammatory properties and plays a role in the pathogenesis of several intestinal diseases. IL-22 is regarded as a crucial cytokine regulating host immunity in infectious diseases, including COVID-19.
IL-22 drives epithelial regeneration after injury, maintaining barrier function and limiting further tissue damage.
IL-22 contributes to antimicrobial defence at mucosal surfaces, making it relevant to host-pathogen studies.
IL-22 has pro-inflammatory properties and is implicated in the pathogenesis of several intestinal diseases.
IL-22 activates JAK1, TYK2 and STAT3 through IL22RA1 and IL10RB, alongside ERK1/2 and PI3K/AKT pathways.
IL-22 modulates tissue responses during inflammation and supports epithelial regeneration to maintain barrier function after injury. It signals through IL22RA1 and IL10RB, activating JAK1, TYK2 and STAT3 to promote cell survival and proliferation. Unlike most cytokines, it has no effect on immune cells.
The gene symbol is IL22 and the protein is listed as interleukin-22. Aliases include ILTIF, IL-TIF, zcyto18, IL-D110 and TIFa. Some records also carry the older labels IL-21 and TIFIL-23, which should not be confused with the separate cytokines IL-21 and IL-23.
IL-22 plays a role in the pathogenesis of several intestinal diseases and regulates host immunity in infectious diseases, including COVID-19. The mouse ortholog is Il22. Check the datasheet of any product for its validated reactivity.
