MIP-1 alpha C-C motif chemokine ligand 3 · macrophage inflammatory protein 1 alpha

MIP-1 alpha, encoded by the CCL3 gene, is a secreted CC chemokine with inflammatory and chemokinetic properties. Also known as C-C motif chemokine 3, LD78alpha, G0S19-1 and SCYA3, it signals through the receptors CCR1, CCR4 and CCR5. Target information

What is MIP-1 alpha (c-C motif chemokine ligand 3)?

MIP-1 alpha (macrophage inflammatory protein 1 alpha) is a monokine with inflammatory and chemokinetic properties. It plays a role in inflammatory responses by binding to the receptors CCR1, CCR4 and CCR5. The protein is also recognised as one of the major HIV-suppressive factors produced by CD8+ T-cells, and recombinant MIP-1 alpha induces a dose-dependent inhibition of different strains of HIV-1, HIV-2 and simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV).

The CCL3 gene (C-C motif chemokine ligand 3) encodes a small, secreted cytokine that belongs to the intercrine beta, or CC chemokine, family and sits within the HGNC group of chemokine ligands. Orthologous genes, both named Ccl3, are present in mouse and rat, which allows the biology of this chemokine to be studied in rodent models.

The locus has carried several names, including small inducible cytokine A3 (homologous to mouse Mip-1a) and chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 3, and the aliases G0S19-1, LD78, LD78alpha, SCI and SCYA3 all refer to the same gene. Polymorphisms at this locus may be associated with both resistance and susceptibility to infection by human immunodeficiency virus type 1, which makes MIP-1 alpha a recurring subject in studies of chemokine signalling, inflammation and viral infection.

Inflammation research

MIP-1 alpha is a monokine with inflammatory and chemokinetic properties that contributes to inflammatory responses through CCR1, CCR4 and CCR5.

Chemokine receptor signalling

As a ligand for CCR1, CCR4 and CCR5, MIP-1 alpha is used to examine how CC chemokines engage their receptors.

HIV and antiviral studies

MIP-1 alpha is a major HIV-suppressive factor from CD8+ T-cells, and the recombinant protein inhibits HIV-1, HIV-2 and SIV strains.

Genetic susceptibility studies

Polymorphisms at the CCL3 locus may be associated with resistance and susceptibility to HIV-1 infection.

Background

MIP-1 alpha frequently asked questions

What does MIP-1 alpha do?

MIP-1 alpha is a secreted monokine with inflammatory and chemokinetic properties. It binds the receptors CCR1, CCR4 and CCR5 to take part in inflammatory responses. It is also one of the major HIV-suppressive factors produced by CD8+ T-cells.

What other names are used for MIP-1 alpha and CCL3?

The gene symbol is CCL3, and the protein is also called C-C motif chemokine 3 or macrophage inflammatory protein 1 alpha. Aliases include G0S19-1, LD78, LD78alpha, SCI and SCYA3. Earlier names include small inducible cytokine A3 and chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 3.

Is MIP-1 alpha conserved in mouse and rat, and is it linked to disease?

Mouse and rat both have an orthologous Ccl3 gene; check the datasheet of any product for its validated reactivity. In humans, polymorphisms at the CCL3 locus may be associated with both resistance and susceptibility to HIV-1 infection.
