Mucin 5AC
Mucin 5AC (MUC5AC, also known as MUC5) is a secreted, gel-forming glycoprotein of gastric and respiratory tract epithelia. It protects the mucosa from infection and chemical damage by binding inhaled microorganisms and particles for removal by the mucociliary system. Browse Assay Genie's current range of Mucin 5AC research reagents below, or read on for the biology behind the target.
Mucin 5AC is a gel-forming glycoprotein produced by the epithelia of the stomach and the respiratory tract. Its main role is protective: it helps shield the mucosa from infection and chemical damage by binding to inhaled microorganisms and particles. These bound materials are then cleared by the mucociliary system. In the gastric epithelium, Mucin 5AC interacts with H. pylori, and this interaction is also noted in Barrett's oesophagus and in gastric metaplasia of the duodenum (GMD).
The MUC5AC gene encodes a very large secreted protein and belongs to the HGNC mucin gene group, within the oligomeric mucus/gel-forming mucins. NCBI Gene describes the protein as located in the mucus layer, and predicts that it acts as an extracellular matrix structural constituent and functions in the maintenance of lens transparency. As a secreted product, Mucin 5AC is usually studied in mucus, secretions and tissue contexts, whether by Mucin 5AC antibody based detection or by a Mucin 5AC ELISA kit approach.
The gene has carried the alias MUC5, and its earlier HGNC name was mucin 5, subtypes A and C, tracheobronchial/gastric, reflecting its original description in airway and gastric tissue. Mucin 5AC is implicated in dry eye syndrome and is reported as a biomarker of several diseases, including Sjogren's syndrome, multiple biliary tract diseases, cystic fibrosis, multiple eye diseases and multiple pancreatic cancers. These associations make it a frequent subject in mucosal biology, ocular surface and epithelial disease research.
