CXCL11 C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 11 · I-TAC

CXCL11 (C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 11, also known as I-TAC, IP-9, H174 and b-R1) is a secreted CXC chemokine that attracts interleukin-activated T-cells. It binds the receptor CXCR3 and is its dominant ligand. Browse Assay Genie's current range of CXCL11 research reagents below, or read on for the biology behind the target.

Target information

What is CXCL11 (c-X-C motif chemokine ligand 11)?

CXCL11 is a chemotactic protein for interleukin-activated T-cells. It does not attract unstimulated T-cells, neutrophils or monocytes. It binds CXCR3 and induces calcium release in activated T-cells. NCBI describes it as the dominant ligand for CXC receptor-3. That makes it a useful reagent target for studies of activated T-cell trafficking.

The CXCL11 protein belongs to the intercrine alpha (CXC) chemokine family. Chemokines are small, mostly basic, structurally related molecules. They regulate the trafficking of leukocytes by interacting with a subset of seven-transmembrane, G protein-coupled receptors. They also contribute to the development, homeostasis and function of the immune system. They affect cells of the central nervous system and endothelial cells involved in angiogenesis or angiostasis. The CXCL11 gene is annotated as an antimicrobial gene and contains four exons and at least three polyadenylation signals, which may reflect cell-specific regulation of expression. IFN-gamma is a potent inducer of its transcription. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been reported. The mouse ortholog is Cxcl11.

UniProt notes that CXCL11 may play an important role in central nervous system diseases that involve T-cell recruitment, and may contribute to skin immune responses. The target has appeared under several names, including small inducible cytokine subfamily B (Cys-X-Cys), member 11, and the symbols SCYB9B and SCYB11. Researchers working on CXCL11 often study it alongside other CXC chemokines, and in the context of CXCR3 signalling.

T-cell chemotaxis

CXCL11 attracts interleukin-activated T-cells but not unstimulated T-cells, neutrophils or monocytes, making it a model for selective lymphocyte recruitment.

CXCR3 signalling

As the dominant ligand for CXCR3, CXCL11 is central to work on receptor activation, including calcium release in activated T-cells.

Neuroimmunology

CXCL11 may contribute to central nervous system diseases that involve T-cell recruitment, so it is studied in neuroinflammatory settings.

Skin immunity

UniProt reports that CXCL11 may play a role in skin immune responses, which supports its study in cutaneous immunology.

CXCL11 frequently asked questions

What does CXCL11 do?

CXCL11 is a secreted chemokine that is chemotactic for interleukin-activated T-cells but not unstimulated T-cells, neutrophils or monocytes. It binds CXCR3 and induces calcium release in activated T-cells. It may contribute to T-cell recruitment in central nervous system disease and to skin immune responses.

What other names is CXCL11 known by?

CXCL11 is also called I-TAC, IP-9, H174, b-R1, SCYB9B and SCYB11. Earlier names include small inducible cytokine subfamily B (Cys-X-Cys), member 11, and chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 11. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described for the gene.

Is CXCL11 conserved in other species, and what induces it?

A mouse ortholog, Cxcl11, is annotated. Human CXCL11 belongs to the CXC chemokine family, and IFN-gamma is a potent inducer of its transcription. Check the datasheet of any product for its validated reactivity.
