VEGF-C Vascular endothelial growth factor C

VEGF-C (vascular endothelial growth factor C, also known as VRP) is a secreted growth factor of the PDGF/VEGF family. It promotes angiogenesis and endothelial cell growth, and binds and activates the receptors KDR/VEGFR2 and FLT4/VEGFR3. Target information

What is VEGF-C (vascular endothelial growth factor C)?

VEGF-C is a growth factor active in angiogenesis and endothelial cell growth. It stimulates the proliferation and migration of endothelial cells and also affects the permeability of blood vessels. It binds and activates two receptors, KDR/VEGFR2 and FLT4/VEGFR3. The protein is made as a proprotein, which is then cleaved into a fully processed form that can bind and activate VEGFR-2 and VEGFR-3.

Functionally, VEGF-C may act in the angiogenesis of the venous and lymphatic vascular systems during embryogenesis. It may also contribute to the maintenance of differentiated lymphatic endothelium in adults. This links the factor to both blood vessel and lymphatic biology, and makes it a common subject in vascular research.

The VEGF-C gene, VEGFC, is the HGNC-approved symbol for this member of the VEGF family; VRP is a recognised alias. The encoded protein belongs to the platelet-derived growth factor/vascular endothelial growth factor (PDGF/VEGF) family and is secreted from the cell. Orthologous genes, both named Vegfc, are annotated in mouse and rat, which allows the factor to be studied in common rodent models. Researchers studying VEGF-C signalling often work with the VEGF-C protein, measure it with an ELISA kit, or detect it with a VEGF-C antibody, depending on the question being asked.

Angiogenesis research

VEGF-C promotes angiogenesis and endothelial cell growth, stimulating endothelial proliferation and migration.

Lymphatic vascular biology

VEGF-C may support lymphatic angiogenesis in the embryo and the maintenance of differentiated lymphatic endothelium in adults.

Vascular permeability studies

VEGF-C can affect the permeability of blood vessels, so it is relevant to studies of endothelial barrier function.

VEGFR signalling

VEGF-C binds and activates KDR/VEGFR2 and FLT4/VEGFR3, making it a tool for dissecting receptor-driven endothelial responses.

Background

VEGF-C frequently asked questions

What does VEGF-C do?

VEGF-C is a secreted growth factor active in angiogenesis and endothelial cell growth. It stimulates endothelial proliferation and migration, affects blood vessel permeability, and binds and activates KDR/VEGFR2 and FLT4/VEGFR3. It may also maintain differentiated lymphatic endothelium in adults.

What are the other names for VEGF-C?

The HGNC gene symbol is VEGFC and the full name is vascular endothelial growth factor C. VRP is listed as an alias. The protein is synthesised as a proprotein that is cleaved into a fully processed form able to activate VEGFR-2 and VEGFR-3.

Is VEGF-C conserved in mouse and rat?

Yes. Mouse and rat both have an ortholog named Vegfc, so the factor can be studied in rodent models. VEGF-C belongs to the PDGF/VEGF growth factor family; check the datasheet of any product for its validated reactivity.
