Overview

What is Schistosomiasis?

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by Schistosoma flukes; chronic infection drives granulomatous inflammation around eggs deposited in the liver, bladder or intestines.

People are infected through contact with freshwater containing larvae released by snails. Antibody assays using soluble egg (SEA) and worm antigens support diagnosis and epidemiological studies.

Transmission & symptoms

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by Schistosoma blood flukes. People are infected through contact with freshwater containing larvae (cercariae) released by snails; chronic disease results from granulomatous immune responses to eggs trapped in the liver, bladder or intestine.

Diagnosis & serology

Diagnosis combines egg microscopy and antigen detection (circulating anodic/cathodic antigens) with antibody serology. ELISA measures anti-schistosome antibodies and the strongly Th2-skewed host response.

Research applications

Research tools support schistosome serodiagnosis and the hallmark Th2 immunity (IgE, IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, eosinophil markers) that drives granuloma formation and fibrosis.

FAQs

Schistosomiasis — frequently asked questions

How is schistosomiasis diagnosed?
By detecting eggs in stool or urine, circulating schistosome antigens, and anti-schistosome antibodies by ELISA.
What kind of immune response does schistosomiasis drive?
A strongly Th2-polarised response (IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, IgE, eosinophilia) that underlies egg-granuloma formation and tissue fibrosis.
How do people become infected?
Through skin contact with freshwater containing cercariae released by intermediate-host snails.
