What is Measles?

Measles is caused by a highly contagious morbillivirus that spreads through the air and causes fever, rash and, in some cases, serious complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis.

It is vaccine-preventable (MMR). Anti-measles IgG/IgM ELISA is used to confirm infection, assess immunity and monitor vaccine coverage, alongside recombinant nucleoprotein and haemagglutinin antigens.

Transmission & symptoms

Measles is among the most contagious human viruses, spreading through the air and causing fever, cough, coryza, conjunctivitis and a characteristic maculopapular rash. Complications include pneumonia, encephalitis and immune amnesia; it is vaccine-preventable with MMR.

Diagnosis & serology

Diagnosis uses anti-measles IgM (recent infection) and IgG (immunity/past exposure) by ELISA, with the nucleoprotein (N) and haemagglutinin (H) as key antigens. IgG is the standard immunity correlate for outbreak and vaccine studies.
