What is Hepatitis?

Viral hepatitis refers to liver inflammation caused by hepatitis viruses A through E, which differ in transmission (faecal-oral for HAV/HEV; blood and body fluids for HBV/HCV/HDV) and chronicity.

Serological markers — HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HBc, anti-HAV and anti-HCV — underpin diagnosis, staging and vaccine assessment, supported by ELISA and recombinant viral antigens.

Transmission & symptoms

Viral hepatitis (types A–E) inflames the liver but differs by route: HAV and HEV are faecal-oral, while HBV, HCV and HDV spread through blood and body fluids. HBV and HCV can become chronic, driving cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma.

Diagnosis & serology

Serology defines infection and immunity: HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HBc and HBeAg for HBV; anti-HCV for HCV; anti-HAV and anti-HEV for the enteric hepatitides. ELISA is the workhorse for screening, staging and vaccine assessment.

Research applications

Research tools span HBV entry via the bile-acid transporter NTCP (SLC10A1) and the HCV receptor complex (CD81, SR-BI, claudin-1, occludin), plus liver-injury and HCC markers such as ALT and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP).
